Several members of Phil Guy's band, The Chicago Machine, and friends performed at The Checkerboard Lounge, Chicago, IL, Friday, May 29, 2009.
The Phil Guy International Day was a great success! As you will see on the Tour and Schedule link, musicians and bands around the world performed remembering Phil on his birthday, April 28. It began with Dario Lombardo giving several radio interviews and an opening speech on April 23rd in Italy and concluding Tuesday night in Chicago at Buddy Guy's Legends. Big James and the Chicago Playboys outdid themselves in their music show. James asked Lisa Mallen to say a few words about the event and recognition. The place was packed. The icing on the cake happened when Buddy Guy strode onto the stage where he played his guitar and sang, as always, exhilirating. Check out the schedule of bands and venues that participated on the Tour and Schedule link
2008 News:
The very sad news is that Phil Guy passed away August 20, 2008, from complications of prostate cancer. With no symptoms, other than being tired, he checked in with his doctor, in January 2008. He was adamant about his checkups due to his previous heart problems. He was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. It had already spread to his lungs and bones. It was unbelievable to him and his family and friends, as he was adamant about having his frequent doctor checkups.
This year was an incredibly hard year for him, with the chemotherapy and radiation, but he marched on, and did what he could and what he wanted to do, to bring the blues music and other music to you, his fans, family, friends and musicians.
Phil would want everyone to celebrate not only his own life and music, but also all the blues musicians past and present. He was a humble, genuine man and a wonderfuly talented and brilliant musician who loved his family and who treated everyone the same.
Thank you to all of you who helped Phil get through this last year. LM
(For any of you - men - especially African American men, please get tested for prostate cancer. It is easy and well worth your time. Do this for Phil.)

Phil's new CD released 2006:
He's My Blues Brother
Read the recent reviews about Phil Guy and about his new CD:
"What do you get when you cross the sounds of B.B. King, the Rolling Stones, combined with a little bit of Otis Redding and Muddy Waters, and top it off with a good dose of James Brown? Musical fusion at its best is what you get! And that's exactly the eclectic combination of sounds that you'll hear with legendary blues performer, Phil Guy. . . Bottom line, listening to Phil is energetic fun, and a classic blues sound sure to please. . . Although the music industry lost a pioneer this year with the passing of James Brown, and the "I Feel Good" generation, Phil Guy, modeled after the "Godfather of Soul" is someone all ages can and should appreciate."
The Naperville Glancer Magazine, March 2007, vol. 5, issue 15
Celebrity Feature article, Katie Wood
"The first time I heard a stratocaster, Philip Guy was playing one . . . It sounded like somebody threw a coin over thin ice."
Robert Cray quote for 2007 documentary about the fender stratocaster
(click on the News and Links tabs for more info about the documentary)
With his first CD of this decade, Phil Guy proclaims to the world he is the blues. . . It's not just the roots, but what's happening today . . . Throughout the record, Phil's guitar is sharp but laid back, making every note count. . . This is the real blues from the southern levees to downtown Chicago. Phil is not just Buddy's younger brother, he is the blues.
Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine Oct./Nov.2006
Buddy Guy's brother, Phil Guy, was a surprise to many; he showed the huge crowd that musical brilliance runs in the family . . .
Blues Wax article 11/02/06 re. Phil's performance at the
2006 San Francisco Blues Festival, Phil Reser
When interviewed by Justin O'Brien for LB 179 (Living Blues magazine), Guy predicted that this record - if he ever got it out - was "gonna be the best one" he'd done. Give it a listen and you'll agree.
Living Blues Magazine
"Phil Guy is classic LB (Living Blues) material . . . week in and week out Phil has played the blues . . . it's what he does."
Living Blues editor, Brett Bonner - July/August 2005
"Phil Guy has one of the most envious careers in the blues. He has toured Africa and ridden the storied Festival Express across Canada as part of the band of his older brother, blues guitarist Buddy Guy."
Hartford Advocate, Wang Dang Doodle, Art Tipaldi, March 2006
Phil Guy is an old school blues man, plain and simple. He walks the walk, talks the talk, and, most importantly, he can rip on the guitar. There are decades of history in those wailing riffs.
Anchorage Press, Casey Grove, October 2006
Phil serves up a heavy dose of his easily identifiable funk induced blues and slashing guitar throughout ten songs he co-wrote . . .Phil is reunited with brother Buddy on the rousing title track where their differing styles - Phil combines multiple funky conglomeration while Buddy performs straight ahead Chicago blues - compliment each other favorably.
Tim Holek - Blues critic and journalist
